Types of Braces

Traditional Metal Braces Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces. They are made of high-grade stainless steel. Colored elastics are used to hold the wire to the bracket. The option of clear elastics is also available for adult patients.

Advanced Metal Braces Metal Braces (Self-Ligating Brackets)

Advancement in the field of Orthodontic has lead to the development of self-ligating brackets that allow more control during treatment than traditional brackets. The difference is that they are smaller in size but also stronger and more efficient because they have a built-in doors that holds the archwires in place without the need for wire or elastic ties.

Ceramic Braces Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are made of clear materials and have the esthetic advantage of being less visible on your teeth than metal braces. Ceramic braces are used mainly on older teenagers and adult patients who have cosmetic concerns. Although they are visually less prominent, they do require more attention when it comes to oral hygiene as ceramic braces are larger and are more brittle than their metal counterparts. For these reasons, ceramic braces tend to be used more on upper front teeth than on lower teeth. They are also more prone to staining from red wine and certain spices.

Invisalign

Invisalign®

Invisalign® uses a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable trays to straighten your teeth. They are invisible when you are wearing them and therefore popular with patients that have cosmetic concerns. They are also removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment, plus brushing and flossing are less of a hassle. The aligners are comfortable and have no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment.

Incognito

Lingual Braces (Incognito™)

Lingual braces are invisible and are placed on the back side (tongue side) of the teeth, and they are not visible from the front. Working just like traditional braces, lingual braces eventually straighten a patient's teeth within the same amount of time metal braces would. Cuts and sores on the inside of your mouth are more likely, as well as difficulty speaking when they are first put on. These are usually more expensive because the treatment is more specialized.
